The early concerts at which Neil Young played material from his yet-to-be-released Tonight's the Night album are legendary for their supposed uncompromising nature. Here we have one of them, taken from a November 15, 1973 show at Queens College in New York. Unfortunately, this bootleg was made from an audience tape, and while the sound isn't bad as such things go, the inevitable brittle hollowness of the voice and some of the instrumentation makes it much less of a valuable listening experience than it could be. Too, the 15 songs here aren't exactly a live presentation of the compositions that would comprise the Tonight's the Night album; about half of those tunes are here, but the rest draws from earlier Young works, going all the way back to Buffalo Springfield's "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong." It's a respectably hard-nosed set, also including such esteemed Young songs as "Cinnamon Girl," "Cowgirl in the Sand," "I Believe in You," "Helpless," and "When You Dance I Can Really Love." And you do hear a little of the strange, aggressive stage banter reported to have taken place at these shows, Young at one point telling someone or some people to shut up so that he can be heard/play better, and at another mumbling his famous announcements welcoming the audience to Miami Beach. It's just hard to get past the substandard sound quality unless you're a Neil Young scholar. ~ Richie Unterberger|
