Description:
This is the second volume of Christmas cantatas by Georg Gebel (1709–1753). It features two cantatas intended to be performed on the Sunday immediately following Christmas and on New Year’s Day. In addition to the first collection (777610-2), cpo has released several other works that have been well received, and these cantatas—recorded here for the first time—are sure to be a welcome gift for fans. These are magnificent works that employ an unparalleled mastery of counterpoint even when compared to his contemporaries, as well as melodies and harmonies that were innovative for their time. This composer, who loved cutting-edge styles, died at the age of 44; had he lived a little longer, he would undoubtedly have written very different music. Naxos Japan
