Alfven, Hugo (1872-1960)

Description:

Hugo Alfven, one of the leading composers of Swedish music in the 19th and 20th centuries, is known primarily as a composer of three "Swedish Rhapsodies," including No. 1, subtitled "Midsummer Night's Eve," five symphonies and other orchestral works, choral works for male and mixed voices, and songs. He is mainly known as a composer of songs. Although he composed only a few pieces for piano because he was not a pianist himself, he left behind some charming pieces that are well-liked. The "Drawing on the Reef" was inspired by the sea and the nature of the Stockholm archipelago, similar to Symphony No. 4 "From the Reef by the Sea" and the symphonic poem "The Legend of the Reef". Victory March" was written for the wedding of a friend. Nocturne," reminiscent of the "Elegy" from the "Gustav II Adolf" suite. Two waltzes, "Margitta Dances" and "First Love", are reminiscent of the "Elegy" from the "Gustav II Adolf" suite; "Sorrow", in which he tells his girl friend that he is in love with her; and the melancholic "Dreaming". Four Songs of Lakesand (Some Songs of Lakesand)" reflects Swedish folk music. Memories of Ossen" colored by music from the Dalarna region.Pianist Stefan Lindgren (1960-) studied at the Royal Stockholm School of Music and the Juilliard School. He is a concert pianist whose repertoire includes works by Rachmaninoff, Glazunov, Scriabin, Godowsky, Alkan, Hummel, and Chopin, and has been the pianist for the Stockholm Philharmonic since 2007. This is the first complete recording of his piano music, including fragments such as "Memories of Elvsteen," which Alveen wrote at the age of 13 as a reflection on the summers he spent as a boy in the archipelago.
