Bassoonist O'Neill's orchestral arrangement of the Golberg Variations, a work that challenged the Corona Disaster. The SACD Hybrid version is a recording of the orchestral arrangement of the Gortberg Variations, performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Robin O'Neill. Robin O'Neill, bassoonist and conductor of recent years, has taken on the challenge of the Corona disaster of 2020 with this orchestral arrangement of the Gothberg Variations, recorded in 2023 with the Philharmonia Orchestra, of which he is principal bassoonist. During the first months of the pandemic, O'Neill listened repeatedly to Glenn Gould perform the Goldberg Variations, after which he began to hear instrumental and orchestral sonorities in this keyboard work and immersed himself in the arrangement for orchestra. After many attempts at arranging each variation without compromising its qualities, he chose an instrument that Bach himself would have approved of for the solo part. The Goldberg Variations by O'Neill consist of a full orchestral variation and a concerto-like variation with two to four solo instruments, which can be said to be similar in style to the Matthew Passion. The solo instruments include many woodwinds such as oboe, bassoon, and cor anglais, and the arrangement is unique to bassoonist O'Neill.The booklet (English, German, French) includes comments on each variation by O'Neill. Regarding this arrangement, which was completed during the difficult period of the Corona disaster, O'Neill says, "I arranged it in the hope that Bach's music would bring joy and comfort to both performers and listeners."
