Description:

Also includes a commissioned work by percussion genius Colin Currie! Kalevi Aho's Concerto "Siedi" and Symphony No. 5 SACD Hybrid Edition. This is a series of releases of works by the prolific Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. Following the release of his chamber music collection "Prelude, Toccata and Postlude" and "Piano Sonata No. 2" (BIS SA2186), Kalevi Aho has now produced an album of orchestral works. The "Saeidi," whose name comes from the Sami word for an ancient ritual site, such as an unusually shaped rock, was commissioned by the British "virtuoso" percussionist Colin Currie and composed as a "concerto for solo percussion and orchestra. Unlike most percussion concertos, this piece is written in a style in which the percussionist plays at the front of the orchestra. Nine percussion instruments are arranged from right to left and played in turn as "solo instruments": an African djembe, an Arabian darabkha (coblet drum), five tom-toms, a snare drum, a five-octave marimba, a wood block, a temple block, a vibraphone, and a tom-tom. The orchestra, which includes a timpani player and three other percussionists, is also given an important role in this piece, asserting its presence to the extent that it can be described as a "concerto for orchestra." One-movement structure. The music changes its expression in a variety of ways: fast tempo, slow tempo, wild rhythm, lyricism, tranquility, and so on.The work was premiered in London on April 14, 2012, with Osmo Vänskä conducting and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, the work has gained popularity and has been performed nearly 80 times as of March 2020. Symphony No. 5 was commissioned by the Finnish Radio Orchestra and composed between 1975 and 1976. The composer wrote: "Nothing in this world or in our lives can be said to be perfect or definite. Joy is mixed with sadness, heartache with comedy, and love with anger. People's mutual interests clash, causing communication problems and lack of understanding. Relations between countries are rife with contradictions, and different social ideologies and religions are pitted against each other, often with the result of war" (Kalevi-Aho). The work is written in one movement, and "chaos" and "contradictions," reflecting the composer's "vision" as he describes it, dominate the entire piece. It was premiered in Helsinki on April 19, 1977 by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Okko Kamm. The completion of this monumental work marked a great breakthrough for the "composer" Kalevi Aho. King International
