While her previous album, Songs on Flowers (BISSA 2102), has been the talk of the town, Sampson has recorded songs on poems by Verlaine in this remarkable new release. The French poet Verlaine (1844-1896), considered a symbolist, wrote some 540 verses in a variety of rhymes. Verlaine's life was a life of destruction, although his works include some that are considered to be his finest choruses. Many classical composers were fascinated by his poetry, and the works on this disc are particularly appealing. This is a beautiful collection of songs by famous composers such as Fauré, Ravel, Debussy, Saint-Saens, Ahn, Sevrac, Chausson, and many others.Carolyn Sampson has been described as having "flawless coloratura technique and a richly extended, brilliant voice" and continues to captivate audiences around the world. Her repertoire ranges from baroque and classical songs to operas, and in particular, the Bach Collegium Japan's Wedding Cantatas & Coffee Cantatas is one of Sampson's best-known recordings, and her clear, sensuous singing has been acclaimed as mesmerizing and irresistible.
