The Paris Orchestra’s master musicians join forces with a stellar lineup of soloists! These master musicians bring to life the charm of 20th-century American music! This album features works by three composers who defined 20th-century American music: Bernard Herrmann, who built his reputation in the world of film music; Leonard Bernstein, one of America’s leading composers; and Aaron Copland. It portrays a rich musical world that moves freely between film, theater, and concert music. At the heart of the album is Herrmann’s *Memories of a Journey* for clarinet and string quartet. Comprising three movements inspired by the works of poet A.E. Housman, playwright J.M. Synge, and painter J.M.W. Turner, this piece reveals a side of the composer—introspective and poetic—that differs from his film music. Furthermore, the *Clarinet Sonata*, completed by the young Bernstein in 1942, is an early masterpiece that combines neoclassical clarity with rhythmic vitality. And Copland’s *Quiet City* is based on incidental music he composed in 1939 for a play by the playwright Irwin Shaw. Although the premiere production, directed by Elia Kazan, ran for only a short time, Copland reconfigured the material the following year and released it as a concert piece. In this recording, saxophonist Christopher Brellocks performs the work in an arrangement for trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, and piano, based on the original chamber music instrumentation. The performance features the Atomusica Quartet, composed of members of the Orchestre de Paris led by the orchestra’s principal clarinetist, Philippe Bellot. Joining them are leading French artists such as trumpeter Éric Aubier, saxophonist Nicolas Prost, and pianist Laurent Vagschal.
