The finest Viennese sound. The Wiener Konzentus Musiks was founded in 1953 by Haydn and Schubert Arnoncourt. After Arnoncourt's death, Stefan Gottfried took over as chief conductor, and the CD (AP189) of the four-movement version of Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony attracted attention in 2018. For his second CD following "Unfinished," Gottfried takes on the unique coupling of Schubert's Symphony No. 5 and Haydn's Symphony No. 99. Haydn's Symphony No. 99 is one of the "Zalomon Set" commissioned by the showman Zalomon and was written in 1793. The use of clarinet, trumpet, and percussion in this work is new, and it is a close approximation to Mozart's tone. In fact, some researchers have pointed out that this work was composed after Mozart's death and is a memorial to him. Schubert's Symphony No. 5 was written in 1816 at the age of 19. It is full of Schubert's characteristic melodic beauty, but also has a strong classical influence in terms of writing.
