Michael Franks grew up listening to swing jazz from an early age. In his mid-teens, he developed a taste for jazz and bossa nova, broadening his musical horizons and beginning to compose. He launched his professional music career by composing music for musicals and numerous films. After making his solo debut in 1973 with the album *Michael Franks* (originally titled *Michael Franks*), he enlisted Tommy LiPuma—who was highly regarded in the jazz and crossover genres at the time—as producer in 1975. He invited members of The Crusaders, including Joe Sample, Larry Carlton, and Wilton Felder—members of The Crusaders—to release his second album, *The Art of Tea*, which showcased a unique musical world blending urban sounds with elements of bossa nova and jazz. Since then, he has continued to release music energetically from the late 1970s to the present day, establishing himself as one of the leading figures in AOR music. Now, Michael Franks’s extremely rare Japan tour is finally here!
This recording captures his performance at Nakano Sunplaza in Tokyo in November 1990, which was filmed for television as part of the promotional tour for his 11th studio album, *Blue Pacific*. Although Michael is from Los Angeles, he was backed by New York-based musicians such as Robin Gould, delivering a cool, urban performance. This is a performance sure to move fans to tears, featuring hit songs from the late 1970s through his latest work at the time, including the 1977 classic "Song of Antonio (Weaving a Rainbow)
