Simon Nering is a virtuoso who became the only Polish finalist and Audience Award winner at the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015, and went on to become the first Polish winner of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in 2017. Nering’s new recording, featuring a Steinway piano, presents a fascinating program that explores the behind-the-scenes world of the genius’s experimentation and creativity—ranging from Chopin’s masterpieces to early variations and rare miniatures. This album focuses on the evolution of Chopin’s compositional techniques and his experimental endeavors. It includes “In Memory of Paganini (Variations on a Theme from the Carnival of Venice),” a rare teenage exercise in which Chopin, while inspired by Paganini’s virtuosic style, sought his own unique musical language, as well as “Variations on a Theme by a Swiss Boy,” as well as short pieces unpublished during his lifetime such as “Contredanse” and “Cantabile”—a selection that offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the genius Chopin’s creative process. Furthermore, in addition to major works that have become synonymous with his name—such as the “Etudes (No. 3, No. 17, No. 18, No. 22)” and the “Scherzo No. 4”—works that have become synonymous with him—as well as the unique and rarely performed “Bolero,” which garnered significant attention when it was featured in his January 2026 recital in Japan.
