Description:

Onslow (1784-1853) was a classical composer whose father was an English nobleman who had fled to France to escape a homosexual scandal. He loved hunting as a way of life for the aristocracy, and is sometimes called the "French Beethoven" because of the accidental loss of his hearing during a hunting accident. Nevertheless, his style was reminiscent of Mendelssohn's, which was very prestigious, and he was much loved by his contemporaries. This string quintet is not as cello-focused as the works of Boccherini, who was active in a slightly earlier period, but is a regular string quartet with a double bass in a "bass-dominated" configuration. Recorded by the Elan String Quintet in 2015. (C)RS
