The great composer Taneyev (1586-1915) was actually famous as a pianist, and his concerts were so highly regarded that they were called "musical celebrations for the whole of Moscow. He studied piano with Nikolai Rubinshtein, and after entering the Moscow Conservatory, he was immediately recognized as one of the most outstanding pianists. The Moscow premiere of Chaikosky's famous piano concerto was also performed by Taneyev. However, Taneyev wrote surprisingly few works for piano, and they are rarely performed. Most of the works recorded here are also world premiere recordings. One of the highlights is the Violin Sonata, which showcases his mature compositional techniques. ［Comment courtesy of Naxos Japan
