Description:

Two legendary live performances from Tennstedt's final years are now available on SACD for the first time in the world! The magnificent and overwhelming performance, which is beyond description, has finally been reproduced in high sound quality. The latest reissue in its original 3-CD format! This is the second SACD project of the digital recordings! The live recordings of "Tragic" from 1991, Tennstedt's last year as Music Director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and "Night Songs" from 1993, his last performance and recording, have been reissued on SACD for the first time, following the original format when they were first released on CD! The latest reissue as the first SACD! This performance is the final answer to the many Mahler performances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and it is also a magnificent record that has been engraved in history. Tennstedt always gave his all in his performances, and the latest mastering has been done to reconstruct the final period of the performance! New SACD conversion from the digital master in the home country for this release, mastered separately for the SACD and CD layers. New commentary included. These performances, along with the "Giant" with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, also released at the same time, are renowned as spectacular live performances of Tennstedt's last years. The slow tempo and the expression to this extent are rarely heard. There are rare recordings of the LPO that I cannot listen to more than once in my lifetime because I cannot bear the pressure that weighs so strongly on my mind, even though I appreciate them as great performances. The same is true of the 1989 "Resurrection" live performance with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which is available on the LPO's self-produced disc. In this "tragic" 1991 live performance, which exceeds 90 minutes in playing time, the interpretation is an extension of the earlier session recording, but the expression is deeper and more somber, and the listener is thoroughly devastated. It is a shock to the ears that had never been heard before in this song, and many were puzzled when they first heard it, wondering whether this was a result of Tennstedt's deteriorating health and his view of life and death, or an expanded version of the interpretation that had been deep within him in the first place. While there have been many recordings of this piece since then, none of them have come close to this performance. This is such a special performance that it can be said that only Tennstedt can surpass it. (1/2)
