Description:

A masterpiece of Cuban rural guajira music, finally released on CD! Following Septeto Nacional's masterpiece "Sonés Cubanos," we are pleased to introduce a masterpiece LP that represents the history of Cuban music. This time we will be listening to "Fiesta Cubana: Festival of Guajira" by Ramón Velos and Coralia Fernández, who are highly acclaimed as the best in the field called guajira. Guajira is the music of Cuba's Poor White, white farmers who farm in the mountainous regions. However, in Cuba, sugar plantations covered the entire country from the 19th century, and the idyllic rural landscape of farming villages collapsed. In this situation, a new type of guajira called "guajira de salón" became popular as the music of the peasants who entered the cities at the beginning of the 20th century. This was not guajira as folk music, but modern guajira as "created rural songs. The pioneer in this field was Guillermo Portavalles, who was active from the late 30s, but it was Ramone Bellos and Corralia Fernandez + Eduardo Sabolito's orchestra that took that direction and created even denser and more contemporary music. This album, recorded in 1956, is a masterpiece of contemporary guajira music created by these three musicians. The album features the best repertoire of contemporary guajira, including masterpieces by Portavalles, the founder of the "guajira de salón," and by Celia Romero, a female composer who is considered to be one of the best of her contemporaries. All of the melodies are reminiscent of the Cuban countryside. Even more impressive is the accompaniment of the Sabolito Band, a unique ensemble featuring the laudo, a stringed instrument inherited from the 19th century guajira tradition, which also provides a sound unique to Cuban countryside music. All of the songs, songs, and performances are excellent, but the most exciting of all is "The Country Girl in the Sugar Factory" by Sabolito, the second to last song on the program.Especially in the latter half of the song, when Bellos' voice unusually takes on a lamenting tone and heats up with an Asian-like kobushi, the final section of the famous "Cuban Lament" gives one goosebumps. The late Mr. Toyo Nakamura wrote that this part of the song "gives me chills without exaggeration. Since this is a Disco Lohia recording, it will be presented with the best mastering as usual and a detailed commentary/booklet with bilingual translation. This is another masterpiece that can be enjoyed at least 100 times. A must for Latin music fans. Music selection/commentary: Katsunori Tanaka
