For the Swiss composer Richard Flury, nature was a source of inspiration. He completed his Fifth Symphony—his final symphony—in 1956; its style, which unabashedly highlights the melodic beauty and harmonies directly derived from the German Romantic tradition, is very accessible and stands in stark contrast to the trends in contemporary music of the time. The work consists of four movements and has a playing time of just over 40 minutes. Many listeners will likely recognize Bruckner in the opening music of the first movement and Richard Strauss in the sound of the second movement. The fourth movement, which accounts for nearly one-third of the work, consists of variations on a Swiss student song, and the composer’s unique personality is evident in the deeply moving conclusion. The Artisberg depicted in the 1953 Symphonic Suite is located in the mountainous region of Solothurn, the composer’s hometown; it remains a popular destination today, offering trails where visitors can enjoy the Aare Valley and lush forests.
