András Schiff's piano pieces from the 90's are now available for the first time! From audite's popular Lucerne Festival series "Historic Performances" comes András Schiff's live recordings from 1998 & 1999! This is a carefully remastered CD release of broadcast recordings from the archives of SRF (Swiss Broadcasting Corporation), which has been broadcasting the festival performances since its inception, and features D. Scarlatti and Kurtag, two "small masterpieces" from different eras. The booklet contains many rare photographs. The performance is full of the exuberance of a music festival, and Scarlatti's 1999 performance clearly shows the excitement of a live performance compared to the Decca recording from 1987, with its big swings in tempo, bold intonation and singing, and outstanding improvisational brilliance. Schiff's pianistic pieces had brilliant acoustics, while his quieter pieces had a very delicate delivery. The performance is more dramatic than expected. Kurtág's "Play" (1998) is the composer's life's work, a diary of sorts, a collection of pieces that he began writing in 1973, published in volume 10 in 2021, and is still in progress. Although this is the first recording of this repertoire for Schiff's Hungarian compatriot, he has had a close relationship with Kurtág since he studied with him at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, where he entered at the age of 14, and they share a great deal of the same musical outlook.
