Having studied with Witold Lutoslawski and influenced by Michael Tippett, as well as physics and painting at university, Cowie is known as an accomplished visual artist, drawing and building images when he composes. He has been collaborating with the Kreutzer Quartet for 10 years and has written six string quartets as well as solo and duet pieces for its members. The seventh quartet on this album, "Western Austrian Province," is also dedicated to them. The members of the quartet have skillfully expressed the beautiful landscapes of this vast region through their sounds. Glaucoupis," another work inspired by the habits of owls, is played beautifully by Neil Haidt, cellist of the Kreutzer Quartet. The other three pieces are also performed by members Peter Shepherd Scaves and Mihailo Trandafilovski. The entire album is for the Kreutzer Quartet. (Naxos Japan)
