After studying piano, cello, and harmony at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern College of Music), Pitfield moved to Boston to study art and furniture making. After World War II, he became a professor of composition at the Royal Manchester School of Music, where he taught John Ogdon and others. This album contains songs he wrote. All of them have a rustic flavor with material from folk songs and works of English poets, and some of them are dedicated to his friends.The album cover features a painting by Pitfield, who also worked as a painter. The performance is by tenor James Gilchrist, a leading contemporary English singer. His beautiful and sweet voice brings out all the charm of the works. (Naxos Japan)
