Mariss Jansons Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Mahler: Symphony No. 3 2010 was the year Jansons tackled Mahler's Symphony No. 3, and his performance with the Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO) in February was released on CD and video, and in November he left a deep impression on audiences during a tour of Japan with the RCO. This CD is a live recording made the following month in Munich with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Jansons was always meticulous in his preparations, and this is a concert in which he was in perfect condition. The performance time of each movement is almost the same as that of the RCO recording, which again shows that Jansons had no hesitation in his interpretation. In all six movements, Jansons' skill in presenting the dramatic nature of the music without any lull in the nearly 100-minute performance was superb, as was his careful orchestration of the orchestra. Stutzman's solo singing in the fourth movement was as brilliant as a ray of light shining in the darkness, and the singing of the boys in the fifth movement was truly a chorus of angels. The final movement, a majestic and magnificent climax, showcases the full power of the orchestra and is filled with the exuberance of a live performance.
