To perform Brahms’s masterpiece, the String Sextet, they chose as their collaborators Tabea Zimmermann and Jean-Guihen Queyras—both leading contemporary virtuosos and friends of the quartet. In March 2021, the six musicians embarked on a European tour amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Although some performances were canceled, they achieved great success in Luxembourg and Hamburg before recording this album. The tempos, which consistently convey a sense of positive vitality; the expansive, lyrical phrasing that fully captures the beauty of the melodies; and the rock-solid ensemble—combining the six musicians’ technique and sensitivity with both intimacy and precision—bring out the work’s charm to the fullest. This is a wonderful album that not only carries on the tradition of legendary quartets of the past, such as the Amadeus Quartet and the Alban Berg Quartet, but also allows listeners to experience their unique interpretation of Brahms—one that breathes modern life into period-authentic performances.
