[72 Angels Portrayed by Popular Russian Composer and Pianist Auerbach Through Choir and Saxophone] A major work written for saxophone and mixed choir by Russian composer and pianist Lera Auerbach, who is well known in Japan for her album *Tolstoy’s Waltz* and her participation in *La Folle Journée*. It was performed by Dijkstra and his regular ensemble, the Netherlands Chamber Choir, alongside the Rauscher Saxophone Quartet, which is highly acclaimed for its performances of contemporary works. Composed of “Prelude-evocations” (magical preludes) and an epilogue (Amen), all bearing the title “72 Angels,” the work seeks to depict the mystery and inspiration shared by various religions and mythologies. It is a work with a kind of intoxicating charm, in which the saxophones’ diverse timbres accent the choral music—which possesses a sense of floating and mystery reminiscent of choral works by Schnittke and Ligeti. Exodus 14:19–21 from the Old Testament. This passage depicts the famous scene where Moses parts the sea and an angel protects the people as a pillar of cloud (and a pillar of fire at night); Each verse consists of 72 characters, and it is said that when these are arranged according to a specific rule and read vertically, the names of the 72 angels described in Kabbalah—the mystical tradition of Judaism and Christianity—appear.
