The German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra (formerly the Kaiserslautern German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra of Saarbrücken) performs Dvořák: The Complete Symphonies, Vol. 4. So far, Nos. 1, 3, 4, and 5 have been recorded under the baton of Karel Mark Cichon, but this time No. 2 is performed by the high-profile Inkinen. The symphony, written when Dvořák was 24 years old, consists of four classical movements, and although the influence of Beethoven and other predecessors can be felt here and there, it is a charming work full of fresh melodies throughout. The difference in expression between the first movement, with its lively rhythms, and the second movement, with its beautiful folk song-like melody, is particularly striking. The two overtures in this recording are works with Dvořák's typical gravitas. Naxos Japan
