Description:
A collection of string orchestral works performed by the prestigious St. Paul's Orchestra in England. None of the pieces are originals, but arrangements from string quartets. Elgar and Arnold are arranged by contemporary composer David Matthews, while Simpson's pieces are arranged by the composer himself. Elgar's string quartet is from 1918. His wife Alice liked the second movement of this piece and it was played at her funeral. Matthews arranged the second movement first, then completed the entire arrangement. Arnold's quartet was written in 1975. It is characterized by ever-changing textures, and the second movement, reminiscent of an Irish folk song, is impressive. Simpson's quartet in a single movement has been expanded to a string orchestra, which adds even more power. Naxos Japan
