Born in Scotland in 1946, harpsichordist Gilbert Rowland is one of Europe's oldest living harpsichordists. He is currently one of the oldest harpsichordists in Europe, and has released the complete harpsichord sonatas of Soler and the clavesan works of Rameau on the NAXOS label and Handel's suites on DIVINE ART, all of which are highly acclaimed for their excellent performances that explore deeply the period in which each work was written. This is the second recording for the ATHENE label, following the previous Mattezzone release, this time featuring Froberger, an important keyboard music composer who preceded Bach. Considered the originator of the suite form in the Baroque era, Froberger's suites, all of which consist of four pieces, are surprisingly varied and rewarding to listen to.
