Description:

The bassoon is said to be the predecessor of the "dulcian," an instrument used during the Renaissance in the 16th century. Vivaldi noted the versatility of the bassoon and composed nearly 40 concertos, but it was not until the late 18th century, when the instrument's performance improved, that the instrument really began to attract attention. This album contains bassoon concertos by four composers. We can enjoy a variety of styles: a brilliant concerto by the 18-year-old Mozart, who probably knew all about the instrument's capabilities; a comparison of unusual works by his pupil Hummel and his contemporary opera composer Vinter; and Rossini's (only) bassoon concerto, which has been attributed as a work by Rossini. Performing is Jaco Ruoma, a member of the Tapiola Sinfonietta since 1993. The virtuoso, who has played as a soloist with the Orchestre de Paris and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, demonstrates his brilliant technique. Naxos Japan
