Description:

Lutoslawski was one of the most important Polish composers of the 20th century. He is known for writing undulating and energetic music throughout his life, while maintaining a traditional style. Hanne Lintu and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra will perform a selection of representative works from each of Lutoslawski's early, middle, and late periods. His important early work, Symphony No. 1, uses a neoclassical style, and was once denounced by the Soviet government as "formalistic. The "Venetian Games" of 1961, written at a turning point in his style, is a work written in the manner of "controlled chance," in which the freedom of the players is emphasized but the whole is precisely controlled. Symphony No. 4 is a masterpiece of his later years, with its fast-changing melody and refined, beautiful sound.
