Description:
The Emperor's Bride", Rimsky=Korsakov's ninth opera, "The Emperor's Bride", published by Barenboim in 1899. Gryaznoy wants to win the heart of his friend's fiancee, Marfa, and plans to douse her with an aphrodisiac. Gryaznoy's lover Lyubasha, thinking she has been abandoned, obtains the poison at the cost of her body. The attempt to replace the poison with an aphrodisiac brings tragedy to all the characters. Marfa's frenzy at the murder of her loved one is Kabuki-like, but the Russian men's amorous nature and the horror of Russian women's jealousy are carnivorous and terrifying. The performance captured here was staged at the Berlin State Opera in October 2013. Dmitry Cherniakov's production shifts the stage from the reign of Ivan the Terrible to a modern-day television station, and shows how the Czar's SS, the core of the characters, are the TV station's brass, who control the masses into submission to the government through propaganda broadcasts about the Czar's bride offer. The entire production is computerized, and the profile of the main character, Marfa, is also depicted through monitor projections and e-mail chats among the staff members. The art is modern, but the stage's tray-rolling and other Kabuki inspired techniques are intriguing. Nevertheless, Rimsky-Korsakov's music remains original and has a presence that belies any staging. Barenboim's eloquent conducting is also noteworthy. The orchestra reproduces the Russian fantasy and raging passion with sparkling brilliance and tension. Special mention should be made of Anita Rakhvelishvili as Lyubasha. Her performance as the jealous villain is so convincing that it is frightening to watch. Also valuable is the performance by the famous 72-year-old singer Tomois Sintow. Oliga Perechatko, who plays the leading role of Marfa, expresses from a pretty high school girl to a crazed married woman with a beautiful and pure voice. The film's pathetic ending will bring tears to your eyes. King International
