The world’s top three musicians, known as the “Super Guitar Trio”: John McLaughlin (Jan. 4, 1942–), Al Di Meola (July 22, 1954–), and the late Paco de Lucía (1947–2014)—a recording of their performance in San Francisco on Friday, December 5, 1980. In 1980, live performances featuring only acoustic guitars were extremely rare, and this 20th-century masterpiece became a major talking point when it was first released in 1981. Al Di Meola, who gained attention at a young age by joining Return to Forever; John McLaughlin, who played a pivotal role during the electric era of the “Emperor” Miles Davis and was influenced by Indian music and flamenco; and Paco de Lucía—the “god” of flamenco guitar—engage in a breathtaking, virtuosic guitar battle brimming with overwhelming power and a sense of immediacy!
