The debut of the graceful saxophonist Misato Hanawa. The debut album of Misato Hanawa, an accomplished saxophonist who trained in France and has won prizes at numerous European competitions. Drawing on her years in France, she brings rich colour to beautiful, delicate works by Ravel, Poulenc and others, singing out with real passion in the title piece, Hommage à Édith Piaf, and in Impression d'automne. She went to France in 2007 as a scholar of the Maeda Memorial Scholarship Foundation. In 2008 she won first prize in the chamber music division of the U.F.A.M. International Music Competition by unanimous decision of the jury, together with the jury's special prize, and gave a prizewinner's recital at the Église Notre-Dame-du-Travail in Montparnasse, Paris. She took first prize at the Paris International Music Competition in 2011, and in 2010 received the diploma in the virtuoso division of the 8th Padopa International Music Competition in Italy. In 2011 she took third prize at the 3rd Stangel International Music Competition, and she has won prizes at various other competitions abroad. She graduated with highest honours in both saxophone and chamber music from the Conservatoire de Cergy-Pontoise in France, and completed the advanced course at the Conservatoire de Cambrai with first prize and the unanimous congratulations of the jury. She went on to further study in the chamber music department of the Conservatoire Maurice Ravel in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. In 2010 she served as assistant to Julien Petit, professor at the Conservatoire de Cambrai. She has appeared in the selected artists' concert at the Grave International Music Academy. She has studied saxophone with Nobuya Sugawa, Kazuhiro Ninomiya, Hiromi Hara, Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Julien Petit and Béatrice Reibel, and chamber music with Kazuo Tomioka, Masahiro Owada, Marie-Lise Fourmeau, Julien Petit, Béatrice Reibel and Christian Wirth. She gave her debut recital at Art Tower Mito in March 2009. After four and a half years of study in France she returned to Japan in August 2011, and at her homecoming recital at Avenue Hall in Sengawa, Tokyo in January 2012 she gave the Japanese premiere of a work by Daniil Trifonov (winner of the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition). In March 2012 she gave the Japanese premiere of a work by Narboni at Art Tower Mito. She has appeared frequently with Arisa Sakai, Marie Kigome and Katia Nemirovitch, and has formed Duo Betties with the saxophonist Satoshi Onishi. She teaches at the ESA Music Academy in Osaka. In February 2014 she performed the Ibert Concertino with the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra as part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' programme for emerging performers. Octavia Records
