Description:
For his installment of the enduring DJ-Kicks series, TEED deliberately wanted to put together a fun, danceable mix which would make an ideal soundtrack while one gets ready for a grand night out. He keeps more atmospheric selections to just a quick intro and outro, and otherwise gets right into it with a blend of bubbly and celebratory yet occasionally bittersweet, yearning club tracks, not unlike his own material. Several TEED tunes dot the track listing, including a retooled remake of 2022 single "Never Seen You Dance" and a cover of KC and the Sunshine Bands "Please Dont Go." A few other tracks go in a similar indie dance/synth pop direction, but TEED more often mixes bubbling, hypnotic tracks rooted in acid and deep house. Dennis Ferrers soulful "How Do I Let Go" is a sharp turn into dancefloor heartbreak, and TEED attempts to heal the pain with his own garage-y instrumental "Persuasion," followed by an ambient electro standout from Jump Source. The mix then switches into a more playful mood with an Arthur Russell-sampling cut by the Martinez Brothers, a more elastic TEED track ("Another Day") and a classy Shanti Celeste remix. Austin Atos "Waiting Room" dips into feelings of loneliness, then the mix perks back up with playful, ear-tickling cuts from Oscar Farrell and Alexander Skancke. The mood darkens a bit toward the end, with David Vunks "Purple Light" bordering on industrial techno, though TEED pulls out a trick from up his sleeve with the sci-fi techno of the Meat Beat Manifesto-adjacent D.H.S. With moments that make the mix verge on turning into a pre-club therapy session, TEEDs DJ-Kicks is a vibrant, emotional ride. ~ Paul Simpson
