Lute virtuoso Joachim Held’s new album features a collection of J.S. Bach’s lute works! It also includes the well-known suites and partitas, familiar from the unaccompanied violin and cello repertoire! ★Herd, the Hamburg-born virtuoso, has finally released a new album featuring Bach’s lute works. While the term “lute suite” may evoke unfamiliar pieces, the Lute Suite in G minor, BWV 995, is an arrangement of the Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 5, and the Lute Suite (Partita) in E-flat major, BWV 1006a, is an arrangement of the Unaccompanied Violin Partita No. 3 in E-flat major, BWV 1006. Because these works are performed on the lute, which has more strings than the violin or cello, the double stops have more breathing room, resulting in a more pleasant listening experience. Additionally, “Prelude, Fugue, and Allegro in E-flat Major” BWV 998 is a representative work of Bach’s lute repertoire: the prelude features flowing music based primarily on triplets; the fugue (four-part) includes a middle section written in a free style; and the piece concludes with a gigue-like allegro. ★Joachim Härt is a lute player who won the 2006 “Echo” German Music Award in the “17th/18th-Century Instrumental Music” category. His recordings released on the Hanssler label include “German Baroque Lute Works” (98234), “Renaissance Lute Works” (98218), “Italian Baroque Lute Music” (98260), and “16th-Century English Lute Music” (98600)—all featuring high-quality lute recordings.
