Description:

A landmark album that brings the great poet's achievements back to life in the modern age. The German medieval poet Walter von der Vogelweide (c. 1170 - 1230) was a lyric minstrel (Minnesinger) who produced a variety of poems unrivaled in quality during this period. He dealt with a wide range of themes and produced masterpieces in many fields, including courtly love songs, didactic poems, proverbial poems, political poems, minstrelsy, and religious poems, which had a long-lasting and profound influence on future generations. His musical legacy is as unknown as his life, and only a few of his works have been handed down to the present day. In this context, American bass singer and lute player Joel Frederiksen and his Ensemble Phoenix Munich have worked closely with musicologists and medieval music specialists to bring Walter's works back to life in the present day, after careful research and historical study. In addition to Walter's compositions, the Ensemble has also produced a collection of works by Jauffre Rudel (1100 ? -1147 ?). -1147 ?) (1100 ? - 1147 ?) and other French minstrels, as well as new songs by the musicians. Frederiksen says, "By actually singing Walther's poems and making music, we can get much closer to the essence of his powerful and sensitive writings than by simply reading them. In doing so, we feel much closer to the Middle Ages."Walther may have been referring to the melodies of the French troubadours. To emphasize the connection between the repertoire of the Trouvère and Troubadour and that of the Minnesinger, Anne Azema, a medieval musicologist and leader of the Boston Camerata, joined Frederiksen's unique bass singing and the "citre" of the medieval lute, and Together with medieval harp and fiddle, which Vogelweide would probably have played himself, they reconstruct the music of this great bard, proving that his world is indeed exciting and unique.
