Live at the Village Vanguard, the new 2025 album by the quartet led by Puerto Rican alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón.
The album, Zenón's 18th leader album, was recorded over two nights in September 2024 at the Village Vanguard in New York City. Released on Zenón's own Miel Music label, the album features six Zenón compositions, plus "El Dia de Mi Suerte" (1973) by Willie Colón and Héctor Lavaux, and "Perdoname" (1990) by Gilberto Santa Rosa. The album features all new songs, including arrangements.
The album opens with Zenon's original song "Abre Cuto Güiri Mambo". This is a bosal (first generation African Spanish) phrase meaning, "Listen closely and hear the mambo. Many of these riffs, mambos, jaleos, whatever you want to call them," Zenón says, "come from a rhythmic standpoint.
Following the opening track is "El Día de Mi Suerte. Even the New York-based album is steeped in the atmosphere of Zenón's native Puerto Rico. Throughout the history of jazz, however, the two places have always been in constant contact. Zenón's music is a product of that very connection.Miguel recalls his first professional job in a salsa band while in high school in San Juan, Puerto Rico. 'We were rehearsing pretty far from my hometown. So on the car ride there, all I heard was Willie Colon and Héctor Laveau. Over and over again. That record is deeply etched in my DNA as a musician. "Like other rearrangements of popular songs, such as 2019's "Sonero" and 2011's "Alma Adentro," the song is almost Zenon's work by the time it's finished. I'm not trying to recreate the original," he says. 'I'm drawing my own elements from the original and trying to bring them to life. The story may be different from the original, but you'll still hear elements of the original."
His experience performing at the Village Vanguard is the basis for the concept of "Cordenadas." In creating the main theme, Zenón researched the geographical coordinates of the Village Vanguard and where each band member came from. Santurce (Zenon), Mayagüez, Puerto Rico (Cole), Caracas, Venezuela (Perdomo), and Graz, Austria (Gravischnig). He coded these numbers into pitches, adjusted them until they were the music he wanted, and then gave the band free rein to play them.As a result, each of the four musicians plays to their respective roots in this famous place, and each feels at home when playing solos.
On the title track, "Vanguardia Subterránea," Zenón has created what he calls "a melodic poem inspired by the history of the club." To sublimate it into a song for the quartet, he added "an uninterrupted groove, something with a straight, clear pulse. Then he added something that drifted against that groove.
