Description:
World premiere recording! SACD Disc! Ethel Smythe's symphony "The Prison"!Ethel Mary Smythe (1858-1944), one of the great pioneers of women composers in the late 19th century and the first woman to be knighted with the title of Dame, made a splash at Chandos with her recording of the "Mass in D" (CHSA 5240), which was rained down by Sakari Oramo. August 18, 2020, will mark the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women's suffrage in the United States. To commemorate the occasion, the world premiere recording of the symphony "The Prison," a late masterpiece by Ethel Smythe, the great feminist and suffragette, composed in 1930 and premiered at Edinburgh's Usher Hall in 1931 under her own baton, will be released! The Prison is a symphony in two parts, Close on Freedom and The Deliverance, written for two solo voices, choir & full orchestra. The text is taken from the philosophical works of Henry Bennett Brewster, and as the title suggests, the theme is prison.Ethel Smythe herself has been imprisoned by the women's suffrage movement.
