Deutsche Grammophon is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year by uncovering treasures buried in its archives and bringing to light for the first time some of the greatest recordings of all time. First up in the fascinating new series "The Lost Tapes" is the last Beethoven recording by Rudolf Serkin (1903-1991). The two piano sonatas are "Waldstein" (1986) and "Passions" (1989). Zelkin, who was born in Bohemia and is celebrating his 120th birthday, is known as a "Beethoven player. After these recordings, production was underway and a jacket had already been designed, but Zelkin's health deteriorated and he was unable to finalize the tapes. This historic release was approved by Rudolf's daughter, Judith Zelkin, herself an accomplished musician. A moving story with her father about the background of these recordings is included in the booklet. My father passed away before I could confirm the release. It's not 'perfect'. Still, I think it is worth sharing. It is a remarkable reflection of Beethoven's and my father's own deep understanding of what it means to be human. When you realize that this performance comes from a man in his 80s, the ability and power of it becomes all the more formidable."The booklet includes liner notes by Jed Distler (in English and German), a copy of the recording plan and a letter to recording producer Judith Sherman, and numerous photographs.
