Mercury Recordings by Paray and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Vol. 1, 23-CD box setThis is a collection of recordings from the first five years (1953-1957) of a decade of recordings by French conductor Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at Mercury. These recordings represent the golden age of the orchestra. The mono and early stereo recordings were newly remastered from original sources by Wilma Cozart Fine, Mercury's music producer, and Thomas Fine, son of Robert Fine, chief engineer. The original jacket is in the same order as the first release. The booklet includes an essay by Thomas Fine on the recording sessions. Saint-Saens' "Organ" Symphony was performed by Paley's childhood friend Marcel Dupré on the new Aeolian-Skinner organ at the Ford Auditorium in Detroit. Also included is a Mass composed by Paley himself, "On the 500th Anniversary of the Death of Jeanne d'Arc". Universal Music/IMS
