Haydn and Mozart under Klaus Tennstedt Notable live recordings of rare repertoire Profil issues on CD a valuable set of live recordings made in the mid-1970s, when Tennstedt had recently come to the West and was beginning to attract attention, as a guest with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Südwestfunk Symphony Orchestra of the day. None of the works here was ever set down in an official commercial recording, and — far removed from the extremes of expression he brought to his beloved Mahler — what impresses is the surprising poise and shapeliness within his boldly decisive music-making. - Sinfonia concertante Mozart's Sinfonia concertante here is a fragment lasting some thirteen minutes, thought to have been written in Salzburg in the late summer or autumn of 1779, at almost exactly the same time as the famous E flat major K. 364, and distinctive in giving the solo parts to a string trio. The soloists are members of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra of the period: first concertmaster Koji Toyoda, violist Passaggio and principal cellist Donderer. Passaggio and Donderer were also well known as alternate members of the Drolc Quartet. - Recitative and aria The recitative and aria K. 528 was written in the autumn of 1787, immediately after Mozart had given the Prague premiere of Don Giovanni, for the celebrated soprano Josepha Duschek, and is memorable for its serious, dramatic cast. The singer here is Zeumer-Pöhl, born in Braunschweig in 1943, a soprano who was a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1970 and is also known for her appearances with Karl Richter. In the other aria, K. 505, the obbligato solo is played not on fortepiano but on clarinet, by the distinguished Dieter Klöcker. - Symphony No. 64 Haydn's Symphony No. 64, known as "Tempora mutantur", dates from the Sturm und Drang period. The mysterious unfolding of the Largo, the sudden eruptions of rough, aggressive writing and the vivid switches into the minor pack a remarkable variety of incident into some twenty minutes. It was a work Tennstedt returned to often, performing it in the late 1970s with the Kiel Opera Orchestra, the Boston Symphony and the Dresden Philharmonic among others — rather as Günter Wand made a speciality of No. 76.
