2015 Salzburg Festival: “The Marriage of Figaro” 4K Blu-ray! “High-definition video” and “high-fidelity audio”—four times the resolution of Full HD! Re-release of 2072955:2072951 (out of print). 4K Blu-ray, also known as Ultra HD Blu-ray (UHDBD). As major Hollywood studios continue to release blockbuster movies on UHDBD and UHDBD players have begun selling in Japan, 2016 is said to mark the dawn of the “4K Blu-ray era.” EUROARTS is taking on this highly anticipated format with the release of the first-ever opera title on UHDBD. A 4K Blu-ray is a disc medium approximately 12 cm in diameter, with a maximum storage capacity of 66 GB for a single-sided, dual-layer disc and 100 GB for a single-sided, triple-layer disc. Compared to the “MPEG-4 AVC/ H.264” used in conventional Blu-ray, “HEVC/H.265” achieves approximately twice the compression efficiency, enabling the recording of video with a resolution four times that of Full HD (1920×1080 pixels)—3840×2160 pixels. *An Ultra HD Blu-ray-compatible dedicated player is required for playback. “The Marriage of Figaro” marks the conclusion of Mozart’s Da Ponte opera trilogy, which began in 2013 under the direction of Sven-Erich Bechtolf. Dan Ettinger, well known in Japan as the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal conductor since 2010, makes his opera debut at the Salzburg Festival. A rising star who served as Kapellmeister and Assistant Music Director at the Berlin State Opera from 2003 to 2008 as Barenboim’s protégé. The cast features Luca Pisaroni, with his model-like good looks; Anette Fritsche, a beautiful soprano garnering attention for her dramatic voice and expressiveness; Adam Placetska, a Prague native active primarily at the Vienna State Opera; soprano Martina Janková, who is based at the Zurich Opera House and also active in early music; and Margarita Grishkova, who received rave reviews for singing the same role during the Vienna State Opera’s 2012 tour of Japan—this is a truly stellar cast of singers. Bechtold’s meticulously crafted direction, combined with stage sets that are sophisticated yet traditional, creates a refreshing impression.
