Australian death metal band ABRAMELIN’s 1994 EP, *Transgression from Acheron*, has been reissued with rehearsal recordings added as bonus tracks. This album captures the primal ferocity of ’90s brutal death metal; from the opening sample taken from John Carpenter’s *The Thing*, the sense of foreboding and suffocation that pervades the entire work erupts all at once. On “Human Abattoir,” down-tuned guitars interlock with a heavy yet razor-sharp precision, while the left-and-right split riffing creates a suffocating atmosphere. The oppressive, palm-muted chugging is suddenly overwhelmed by high-speed sections, drums running amok on the brink of collapse, and vocals sunk so low they’re nearly indistinguishable—all of which create a thoroughly dark atmosphere. This album doesn’t stop at merely emphasizing brutality; it also weaves in eerie spatial arrangements and atmospheric developments—as heard in “DearlyBeloved”—giving the entire album a gloomy depth. The raw, unpolished sound—free from excessive technicality or modern cohesion—lends the album an intense persuasiveness, and the putrid charm unique to underground death metal dominates the entire work. This album is packed with the essence of old-school death metal, condensing raw aggression, malevolence, and heaviness to their absolute limits.
