Description:
Berlioz Goes Space Fantasy! La Fla dels Baus presents a spectacular production of *The Trojans*. Gergiev is on fire! Following the hugely talked-about “Valencia Ring,” stunning footage has arrived from the Valencia Arts Center. Berlioz’s epic “The Trojans.” Once again, the production by the dance company La Fla dels Baus, led by Carles Padrissa, is nothing short of spectacular. It’s presented as a futuristic space fantasy reminiscent of a certain famous movie. With its outlandish costumes, lavish sets, giant screen projections, and dancers suspended in mid-air, the elements that earned the “Valencia Ring” such acclaim are put to full use here as well, making for a truly spectacular spectacle. Conducting is Valery Gergiev, who has been actively performing “The Trojans” in recent years. It’s still fresh in our memory how he achieved a resounding success with the Japanese premiere of *The Trojans* in concert format at Suntory Hall in snowy Tokyo on February 14, 2011. Here, too, he brings out the best in Berlioz’s music—which is characterized by intense focus, energy, and nuanced emotional expression. The cast of singers is also stellar. In the demanding role of Dido is Daniela Barcellona, the “Queen of Rossini mezzos.” Cassandra, the linchpin of the first half, is played by Portuguese prima donna Elisabete Matos. The role of Ene, who is on stage throughout the performance and faces a series of extremely difficult vocal passages, is sung by Lance Ryan, a heroic tenor from White Rock, Canada, who sang Siegfried at the Bayreuth Festival in 2010. The role of Corébe is played by Gabriele Viviani, a baritone born in Lucca, Italy, who is highly popular in Japan thanks to his frequent visits. Additionally, Zlata Brichová, who received rave reviews for her portrayal of Anna in the Japanese premiere, returns to the role. It is a great pleasure that this rich production of Berlioz’s magnum opus has been captured on video. King International
