Description:
The premiere of Mahler's epic "Symphony No. 8" took place at a music festival titled "Munich Exposition 1910. It was planned as the main event of the large-scale music festival, which lasted almost four months, and became so popular that 3,000 tickets for both September 12 and 13 were sold out two weeks before the first performance. Of course, the first performance was a great success. The stormy enthusiasm of the audience lasted for nearly 30 minutes, and it was a memorable moment of triumph for Mahler. The Chiem Orchestra, the predecessor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, was responsible for this premiere, and since then Mahler's Eighth Symphony has become an important work for the orchestra and continues to be performed time and time again. Among other things, it was one of several concerts in the orchestra's 2018/2019 125th anniversary season, and the live performance at the Philharmonie de Paris is the one featured on this album. The orchestra is so large that it is called the "Symphony of a Thousand," and Mahler's compositional techniques are used to the utmost limit, with complex counterpoints throughout the work. Gergiev, who specializes in opera, emphasizes the flow of the story and draws the listener into the work. In particular, the breathtaking power of the rigorous fugue in the first section is a work of Gergiev's own.In the second part, the final scene of Goethe's "Faust" is also depicted with true-to-life sound. The soloists, chorus, orchestra, and all the players gathered their full potential in this wonderful performance. Warner Music Japan
