The ninth collection of Bach's secular cantatas by the BCJ features two pieces for the Collegium Musicum, one a dramatic piece for the Collegium Musicum and the other a celebration of Elector Friedrich August II of Saxony! BWV 201, and the celebratory work for the Elector of Saxony, Friedrich August II, "Now, the glorious sound of the trumpet," BWV 207a. Once again, the full cast of soloists is one of the attractions of this recording, including the well-known Joanne Lang, Robin Blaise, and Dominique Werner, as well as the 2017 Grammy-nominated tenor Nicholas Pang! Hasten, O whirling winds, BWV 201 is a dramatic piece for the Collegium Musicum, said to have been composed during the Leipzig trade fair in the fall of 1729, and the libretto is based on the Greek myth of the pastor god Pan and Phoebus (Poibos-Aporon) competing in song on Mount Tomoros in Lydia.The Pann and Phoebus parts are clearly distinguished in an antagonistic style, with the simple, folksy Pann aria being contrasted with the more precise, high-styled Phoebus aria. The music of BWV 207a, "Now, the trumpet's sound, the bright sound of the trumpet," BWV 207a, was written to celebrate the name day of the Elector of Saxony, Friedrich August II, and is almost verbatim from BWV 207, except for three recitative passages.
