The Complete Ravel Piano Solo Works by Norwegian Master Austborg Norway's Hakon Austborg (1948-) has a special attachment to French piano music, having recorded the complete piano works of Messiaen and Debussy.In the fall of 2018, to celebrate Austborg's 70th birthday will release a complete set of solo piano works by another French great, Maurice Ravel. Ravel's first piano piece, the Spanish guitar-tinged "Grotesque Serenade," the sublime "Ancient Menuetto," the tender and sad "Pavane for a Late Princess," the "Water Play," inspired by the sound of water from springs, waterfalls and streams, and the graceful "Sonatina, The Mirror, dedicated to the members of the avant-garde artists' circle "Apaches"; "Gaspar at Night," based on a fantasy poem by Bertrand; and "Couperin's Tomb," the last piano piece Ravel wrote, in six movements, dedicated to the memory of his lost comrades in arms during World War I. The deeper into the complex and mysterious territory that Ravel presents through his music, the more insoluble are the mysteries that remain.After playing his music for so long, I must admit that there are still aspects of it that I am not sure what to think" (Ausbaugh). Austbaugh's performance also shows that Ravel's darkest side hides behind his brilliant virtuosity. For this recording, Ausbaugh chose a Steinway Model D-274, manufactured in 1893. Ravel's piano music, like his orchestral works, is written with precision and color. The pedal, he says, is the piano's 'orchestrator. In fact, the sound reminiscent of bells and water is inconceivable without the use of a solid pedal. The album was co-produced and engineered by Arne Axelbel, who collaborated with Austborg on albums such as "Wanted" (Aurora ACD5071), which played works by Boulez, Carter, and Skortun.
