This album features a carefully curated selection of works from Villa-Lobos’ extensive piano repertoire—a genre to which the prolific composer devoted particular energy and produced a large number of pieces. When one thinks of Villa-Lobos, “Bachianas Brasileiras”—also included on this album—is particularly famous, and the image of him as a composer who wrote exotic and beautiful works incorporating Brazilian folk elements tends to come to mind first. However, listening to this collection of piano works—perhaps because the piano is such a cost-effective instrument (after all, it requires only a single performer)— the composer engages in a variety of experiments here, which is truly fascinating. “Barbaric Poem,” dedicated to Rubinstein, is brimming with dissonance— (chords almost akin to the tone clusters of Henry Cowell or Ligeti) and rhythms, and is a highly significant album that offers a glimpse into Villa-Lobos’s avant-garde side. The content also makes it easy to understand why Robos was close friends with Edgar Varèse during his stay in Paris. An outstanding album!
