The latest RCO Live album by Jansons, the king of the age who reigns over the RCO and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, two of the world's leading orchestras, was included in the program of his autumn 2008 tour of Japan. Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," which was also on the program for the orchestra's 2008 fall tour of Japan. Recorded at the Concertgebouw in the same year that the orchestra celebrated its 120th anniversary, the album is now available at a special, affordable price. The "Pictures at an Exhibition" arranged by Ravel, the "genius of orchestration," is one of the most popular concert repertoire, and the prestigious RCO boasts a wealth of recordings.Even in the stereo period, the RCO recorded a session with Haitink in September 1962, with Colin Davis in November 1979, and with Chailly in August 1986, and both Haitink and Chailly, the last two chief conductors, recorded early in their careers. The last two chief conductors, Haitink and Chailly, recorded at an early stage before and after their inauguration. Even so, it is surprising to realize that 23 years have passed since the last new recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition" by the RCO. Jansons, on the other hand, has been in his post for five years, and now he has re-recorded "Pictures at an Exhibition" with the RCO, the arm of his chief conductor, for the first time in 20 years, since the session recording with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in August 1988.The RCO is known as a master of orchestral expression in all its splendor, delicacy, shade, and color, and the difference is obvious in a work like "Pictures at an Exhibition," which is full of orchestral sound. From the brilliant trumpet at the beginning, symbolizing the golden brass, through various characterful numbers in which the virtuosity of the principal players shines through, and finally to the Great Gate of Kiev, a dazzling sonic picture scroll is surely being unfolded.
