The Berlin Academy of Early Music first recorded the Brandenburg Concertos in 1998 (HMM931634) and has performed them countless times in concert since then; they have truly mastered this repertoire. The ensemble’s performance is fluid, effortless, and full of playful vitality. Furthermore, Faust and the Academy have already produced a superb recording of Bach’s Violin Concertos (KKC6219/HMM902335), and this recording with Tamesthi was made after the two had come to know each other intimately through their Telemann concerto project. In No. 3, featuring both Faust and Tamesti, the passages in the final movement—unfolding at a dizzying pace—are simply breathtaking! No. 4, featuring Faust, is a piece where the recorder takes center stage, but Faust’s bold, elegant, and virtuosic passages are also a must-hear. No. 6 features a somewhat unusual instrumentation without a violin, but Tamesti’s viola stands out with remarkable presence. There’s also Alperman’s incredibly expressive harpsichord playing and the superb skill of the wind players! It’s a continuous stream of highlights that’s impossible to describe fully, yet the six pieces feel so cohesive that you’ll find yourself listening to them all in one sitting, as if they were a single, grand suite. It has long been known that the performers of that era possessed exceptional technical skill, but as I reflect on this historical fact with renewed astonishment, it feels as though the fervor and vitality of the performance venue at the time—and even the excitement of the audience—have been brought vividly to life.
