In 2015, Rubel brought U.S. indie folk into the Brazilian music scene with *Pearl*, scoring a massive hit both domestically and internationally. Now, three years later in 2018, his masterpiece *Casas*—which received rave reviews from numerous media outlets, won a Latin Grammy, and was even released on physical media by THINK! RECORDS—is finally being reissued by Mr. Bongo. *Casas* was conceived during a roughly six-month stay in Los Angeles. While rooted in MPB, the album subtly weaves in an aesthetic inspired by the alternative R&B and hip-hop scenes of the time—including artists like Frank Ocean and Tyler, the Creator—in a minimalist style, and it immediately garnered a huge response. “Mantra,” featuring Emicida and considered one of the album’s highlights, opens with traditional Brazilian rhythms before gradually evolving from dreamy, jazzy hip-hop into a sequence of string arrangements. “Colegio (College)” masterfully blends a simple drum machine beat with a grand, film-score-like arrangement.
