Following the series featuring master musicians from France—the "Kingdom of Wind Instruments"—such as Éric Aubier (cornet) (INDE152) and Vincent Lucas (flute) (INDE153)—this third installment in our series on Parisian music around 1900 features Alexandre Gatte, principal oboist of the prestigious “Orchestre de Paris.” Gatte began playing the oboe at age 7 and won a gold medal at the Toulouse Conservatory at age 14. He has won first prize at both the 1999 Fernando Gille International Oboe Competition and the 2000 International Oboe Competition (Tokyo), and third place (with no first or second place awarded) at the 2002 ARD Munich International Music Competition, among other achievements. He has performed with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and is active as both a soloist and a chamber musician. This album brings together music from Paris around 1900—the year of the Paris World’s Fair, which was the largest in the event’s history and marked the close of the 19th century while offering a glimpse into the 20th.
