Jules Verne's adventure novel "Around the World in Eighty Days" describes the struggles of Phileas Fogg, a wealthy Englishman who attempts to circumnavigate the world in 80 days. When the novel was published in 1873, traveling around the world by ship and land was a deadly adventure, and the story of the hero's journey eastward from England to the Arabian Peninsula, India, and China, then from Japan (Yokohama) across the Pacific Ocean to the United States, and back across the Atlantic became a huge hit. The novel was soon adapted for the stage, and when it was staged at the Karl Theater in Vienna in March 1875, Suppe's music, recorded here, was used. Suppe's sound depicts the exotic customs and adventures experienced by the main character, Fogg, and also incorporates impressions of America in the midst of the gold rush, making it sound like contemporary film music. In this performance by Salvi, the dialogue is omitted, allowing the listener to fully enjoy Suppé's colorful and eloquent music. Naxos Japan
