[Featuring Barbieri’s Cello and with Roto! Astrig Shiranosian Weaves a Tribute to British Music and the Masters] Astrig Shiranosian and François-Xavier Roto present Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Shiranoshian recorded this piece using the cello that Barbieri—who loved this work and participated in its premiere as a member of the cello section of the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the composer himself—had owned until his death. True to her style, she engages deeply with the work, bringing out its splendor through an eloquent and passionate performance. The album also includes Bruch’s “Kol Nidrei,” which was written in Liverpool and is said to be connected to the city’s Jewish community. Loto, who has served as Principal Guest Conductor since 2017, and the London Symphony Orchestra also provide flawless, well-coordinated support. Additionally, alongside Nathaniel Goan—with whom she has performed for many years—she performs Britten’s Cello Sonata and Elgar’s “Salut d’Amour.” These performances offer a sense of intimacy, like a conversation among close friends, combined with a pleasant sense of tension. The album title, “Sir!,” is said to pay homage to the titles “Sir” held by Elgar and Barbirolli, and “Lord” held by Britten. Naxos Japan
